This plant is native to the Chilean coast in the Atacama Desert, both north and south of Carrizal Bajo, and south towards Totoral, Atacama, Chile. The spines on this plant are long and jet black, the body becomes a powdery olive green when mature. This is a slow growing species, but it does offset to form a cluster with age. Grow this plant in full sun to part shade to keep the body globose and the spines tight. Try to protect from extreme heat. The flower is yellow.
