Black Spine Prickly Pear / Purple Prickly Pear
This plant is native to the southwest USA in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas and northern Mexico in the state of Sonora. This plant grows best in full sun. The pads are a purple/grey/blue color with purple tones being more pronounced in strong sunlight and when cold stressed in the winter. Black and dark grey spines grow mainly from the top or upper portion of the pads and can get several inches long. This plant needs water when growing in spring and summer but very little to none during the winter dormant time. This plant produces beautiful vibrant yellow flowers with dark red throats. This plant is a low grower that spreads wide.
