This plant is native to South America in Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. It has a very large distribution area and has many variations of forms. The form we are offering is one of the more choice forms with thick matte green pads, rather heavily covered in spines that are twisted, curved and have a corkscrew effect to them. This species is rather slow growing for an Opuntia, which makes it a great choice for growing in a pot. This plant grows best in full sun to partial shade. This plant needs water when growing in spring and summer but very little to none during the winter dormant time. This plant produces beautiful Sulphur yellow flowers. This form grows more upright and forms a small shrub.
